This new wine originates from the Valdelascuevas vineyard, one of the highest areas of the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero, and its name is inspired by the distinctive soil of this estate, which contains a high percentage of limestone.
Opposite Finca Villacreces, on an elevated plateau above the Duero River, lies one of the most unique areas in the entire Ribera del Duero, due to both its altitude and its soil. Among pine and holm oak trees, clearings of almost white calcareous soil appear, hosting a hillside estate known as Valdelascuevas. It is here, at an altitude of up to 900 meters at its highest point, where the winery owns this vineyard, planted in 1999 with 100% Tinta Fina.
After several years of conceptualizing this wine, with the 2022 vintage Finca Villacreces decided to carry out a special vinification, using only grapes grown on limestone soil, which produce a very mineral, powerful wine with notes of blue fruit (blackberries, blueberries, redcurrants). In its production, priority has been given to the use of concrete tanks in order to preserve the full potential of these grapes.
For Lalo Antón, General Manager of Finca Villacreces, this project is “very exciting; we firmly believe in the future of this estate, which allows us to achieve strong differentiation in our wines without leaving our Golden Mile.”
In this way, Creta (Latin for lime or chalk) joins the recent changes in identity and labeling of some of their wines, such as Pruno and Finca Villacreces.
All of this vineyard, like the rest owned by Finca Villacreces, is organically farmed, and only 8,102 bottles of the 2022 vintage have been produced. This was a harvest shaped by extreme weather conditions and low yields, which ultimately resulted in fresh wines with generous fruit and ripe tannins.
