Nebro 2022, produced by Finca Villacreces, has been named Best Red Wine at this year’s Magníficos Awards, presented by Vivir el Vino magazine. Each year, these prestigious awards recognise the 11 best wines included in the guide. Following a blind tasting of the highest-scoring wines, the tasting panel selected Nebro 2022 – awarded 100 points – in a closely contested final, where the wine stood out for its complexity and distinctive Ribera del Duero character.
Finca Villacreces, the hidden gem of Ribera del Duero, begins the year with one of the most prestigious accolades in the wine sector. Nebro 2022, the winery’s most personal wine, has reached the very top with this outstanding award. The prize was presented by the Vivir el Vino tasting panel, led by Raúl Serrano, Director of the Guide, together with Alberto Matos, Director of Vivir el Vino magazine.
Lalo Antón, Managing Director of Finca Villacreces, collected the Magnífico Award for Best Red Wine and commented from the stage of Madrid’s Teatro Alcázar that this recognition “acknowledges the effort we make at Villacreces to create a great wine — something unique and unrepeatable — where every small detail is carefully looked after to bring out the full potential of an exceptional grape, without which Nebro could not exist.”
Nebro 2022 comes from a small 1.2-hectare parcel of Tempranillo, planted in 1917 and with very low yields. Only 1,280 bottles of this wine are produced, making it a limited edition from vintages of extraordinary quality. Nebro 2022 underwent malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels, followed by 16 months ageing in fine-grain new French oak barrels from cooperage Darnajou, and a further 6 months in French oak foudres from Taransaud.
According to the Vivir el Vino tasting panel, Nebro 2022 surpasses the 2021 vintage, as it “maintains its depth and concentration with fresher, more immediate fruit. The ageing is perfectly balanced, with integrated spicy, balsamic and toasted notes. On the palate it is exuberant yet taut, with great liveliness, freshness, magnificent acidity and rounded tannins, leading to a long, intense finish that promises excellent ageing potential. It is a wine that faithfully reflects the personality of its vineyard and the mastery behind its winemaking.”
For many years, this Ribera del Duero winery has upheld a philosophy rooted in sustainability and respect for the natural environment that surrounds it.
Located in a meander of the Duero River and embraced by a century-old pine forest, the estate is a haven of tranquillity where organically certified vineyards grow among the pines. Three grape varieties — Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot — are cultivated here and used to produce the wines Pruno and Finca Villacreces.
